Community Service Program (CSP) Intern
Position Description
Organizational Objective: To collaborate with the Third District Juvenile & Domestic Relations Court and the Court Services Unit (CSU) staff to improve outcomes for court-involved youth referred for services and to reduce recidivism.
Position Objective: To support the Community Service Program (CSP) Coordinator in executing the Friends of the Portsmouth Juvenile Court, Inc’s (FOPJC) Community Service Program (CSP) in accordance with Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice requirements and standards; responsible for accomplishing all organizational goals.
General Description: Under general supervision by CSP Coordinator, performs administrative tasks to CSP program including providing intake, executing required documents, maintain electronic and hard copy files, assigning worksites, recruiting, training, while adhering to all Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice standards and Commonwealth of Virginia statutes.
Compensation: The CSP Intern position is an unpaid hands-on educational opportunity.
Accountability: The CSP Intern reports directly to the CSP Coordinator, who is responsible for his/her performance evaluation.
Minimum Training and Experience: Be currently enrolled in a bachelor or post-secondary program.
Special Requirements: Clear a State and Federal Criminal Background check, Sex Offender Registry check and a Central Registry check.
- Valid Virginia Driver’s license, good driving record and personal automobile insurance
- Some general knowledge of juvenile justice system, including juvenile probation and parole.
- Commitment to the FOPJC mission and vision, including a demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion.
- Access to reliable personal transportation.

- Requires computer proficiency with considerable experience in database management.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Provide intake to juvenile referrals from the J&DR Court, Court Service Unit, and the Juvenile Conference Committee in a timely and efficient manner.
- Identify and develop worksites in accordance with all DJJ requirements and protocols. Initiate Memoranda of Understanding with worksites. Provide worksite supervisor with documents.
- Identify, develop, and supervise group worksite assignments. Conduct on-going assessment of worksites, adjusting as indicated.
- Monitor community service hours performed by each juvenile and maintain DJJ database ensuring accuracy and timeliness of all data. Complete required quarterly and yearly program reports ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
- Track the volunteer hours of each worksite supervisor/volunteer and report hours monthly to CSU.
- Perform other duties as assigned and required to maintain operations.
- Represent CSP to the community at large.

Physical Ability: Tasks involve the ability to exert moderate, though not constant physical effort, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, and crouching and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds).
Dexterity: Requires the ability to perform skilled coordinated movements, such as operating a vehicle, various office equipment, etc.
Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require oral communications ability. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds. Some tasks require visual perception and discrimination. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate odors.
Environmental Factors: Tasks may risk exposure to violence, disease, dust, noise, and varied weather conditions.
Additional Performance Factors
- Knowledgeable about the needs and health concerns of children and youth
- Ability to prepare written reports based on data analysis, including tables and graphs.
Safety and Housekeeping: Adheres to all established safety and housekeeping standards, to include regulatory entities. Ensures such standards are not violated.
